Our local library system is in the midst of their adult Winter Reading Program. It runs from January 1st through March 31. Every year I participate. The deal is: read six books, each from a different category, by March 31 and get a cool library mug. Categories include poetry, humor, science fiction, history, local authors, graphic novels, thrillers, romance, books made into movies, and biographies. The idea is to get adults to read different types of books, maybe some that they wouldn’t normally read. It’s just a fun thing to do in the drab days of winter.
When I browsed in the mystery section of my library, I found this little gem. “Murder Most Fowl” is part of the Local Foods Mystery series. The main character is Cam Flaherty, an organic chicken farmer in a small community. One of her farmer neighbors, Wayne, is found dead shortly after she pays him a visit. Cam isn’t a suspect, but several others in the community are. There are a group of animal rights activists who resented his caging of animals and have vandalized his property. There’s also an aggressive neighbor who wanted to buy some of Wayne’s property but was refused.
Cam is dating the local police detective, Pete Pappas, and just can’t resist trying to help solve the case. She has helped out with earlier cases, and jumps into this one as well.
