Charlotte’s Web – by E.B. White (1952)

If you’re looking for one more read-aloud book to squeeze in with your elementary-age child before school starts, this is a great pick. It’s the tale of a pig who is the runt of the litter on the Arable farm, and is seen as undesirable by the farmer. The Arables’ daughter, Fern, begs for the life of the piglet, who is then sold to the Zuckermans who live down the road. Fern names the pig Wilbur, and visits him as often as she can.

Wilbur settles into the Zuckerman farm, and gets acquainted with the sheep and geese living there, as well as the detested barn rat, Templeton. Then comes the dreadful day when one of the animals reveals to Wilbur that he is being fattened up for Christmas dinner. Wilbur is horrified! Fortunately, a spider named Charlotte who also lives in the barn, comes up with a plan to save his life.
