Veteran’s Day – November 11, 2014

Unbroken

It’s Veteran’s Day, 2014. Today Americans will be celebrating the dedication of their military men and women. I am thankful there are citizens who volunteer to train and stand ready to defend our country from attack. I am also thankful for family members who served in World War II, and grateful that they returned home alive. But I look forward to the day when Jesus returns and we move on to another world, one with no hate, no strife, no war, no death. Each book that I read about war affirms my conviction that it is hell on earth. God didn’t create us to hate and hurt each other.

It’s good for us to read about war, lest we forget the cost and begin to glorify it. Some suggested reading:

Unbroken, the story of Louis Zamparini, who was a pilot in WWII and a prisoner of war – by Laura Hillenbrand

Three Came Home, the story of a family in a prisoner-of-war camp in Burma – by Agnes Newton Keith

The Hiding Place, about the TenBoom family, hiding Jews in their home in the Netherlands – by Corrie TenBoom

IBM And The Holocaust – by Edwin Black

Hiroshima, the story of the Japanese people and the first atomic bomb – by John Hersey

I wish each of you a day of blessing. Please join me and others around the world who pray for peace…
